A 20-year-old man risked his life to save a drowning teenager who became trapped after trying to cross a bridge in a flooded Queensland stormwater drain.
The dramatic rescue unfolded just before 4.30pm this afternoon when two boys were swimming in the drain in Durack, in the state's south east, Nine News reports.
One of the boys went to cross a flooded bridge when a refrigerator hurtled down the creek and pinned him to railing of the bridge.
The 20-year-old jumped in and pulled the teen out from the handrail, where he was stuck.
"He was unconscious nearly," eyewitness Jasmine Ross told Nine News.
"They had to get a hose to put in his mouth because the water was gushing over his face that much, he probably could have drowned."
The boy was taken to hospital with leg injuries.
Meanwhile, concerns about a dam collapse and the slow rise of the Balonne River have frayed the nerves of people in the Queensland town of St George, but Premier Anna Bligh warned there was still "no end in sight".
About 2500 residents who evacuated the town at the weekend looked likely to remain at centres in Brisbane and Dalby until next week, with the Balonne rising to a record 13.95 metres on Wednesday, despite earlier predictions it would peak on Tuesday.
