Taxpayers will pay $520,000 for two new lights to shine on Sydney's Opera House so tourists can take better photographs of the iconic landmark at night.

The light posts will be built on the eastern side of the building to reduce shadows, tender documents released yesterday show, the Daily Telegraph reports.

It is hoped the extra lighting will improve photo opportunities for the more than eight million people who visit the Opera House each year.

"It is acknowledged there is a difference in audience between the east and west views of the Opera House, with the eastern side at night being subject to possibly more iconic photographic compositions due to the combined view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge," the documents stated.

The $520,000 cost of the project is part of a development application for one light positioned in the water and another on a nearby wharf.

The application argues the lighting would reinforce the building's unique appearance at night.
