The West Australian government has launched a corruption inquiry into Perth's south-suburban Canning City Council at the behest of its mayor.

Local Government Minister John Castrilli issued a statement on Thursday saying he had ordered the inquiry "into matters related to the governance of the City of Canning" after a request from mayor Joe Delle Donne.

Mr Delle Donne had asked the state government to initiate a review of "matters associated with staffing issues and administration".

"The information I received since that request led me to the view an authorised inquiry is necessary," Mr Castrilli said.

The six-month investigation will look at "governance by the elected council and relationship with executive staff; human resources recruitment processes; procurement of goods and services, including tender processes and contract management; and general performance".

"The authorised inquiry ... will thoroughly examine matters related to these issues and any other matters the investigative team discovers during its inquiry," Mr Castrilli said.

"I have initiated this inquiry to ensure the City of Canning is operating in the best interests of its community."

The Canning City inquiry follows a Crime and Corruption Commission investigation into Perth's north-suburban Stirling City Council, which resulted in one witness taking his own life the day before giving evidence, in September 2010, and another man receiving a suspended sentence in November for his role in $135,000 worth of false procurements.

Mr Castrilli's office said it could not elaborate further on the Canning City inquiry at this time.
