A cyclist has died in Melbourne's northwest after her bike was struck by a car on Friday morning.

Police said the female cyclist was travelling on the Melton Highway at Hillside about 6.15am when her bike was hit by a Nissan coupe at the intersection of Gourlay Road.

The driver, a 23-year-old man from Hillside, is assisting police with their inquiries. The deceased female is yet to be formally identified and police will prepare a report for the coroner.

Her death takes Victoria's road toll to 35, compared with 25 for the same time last year.
