Man suffers 40 per cent burns in lab fire

A science research student has suffered burns to 40 per cent of his body after a fire at a University of Sydney chemistry lab.

Emergency services were called to the School of Chemistry at the university campus about 5.40pm (AEDT) on Friday, a spokeswoman told AAP.

Paramedics said they treated the 29-year-old PhD student for flash burns to 40 per cent of his body, including his arms, legs and neck.

He was taken to the special burns unit at Concord Hospital where he remains in a serious but stable condition.

The fire was quickly extinguished and no evacuations were carried out.
