Condolences have been extended to the family of a bus driver killed in a collision in northern NSW.

The man died and several passengers were injured after the bus collided with a truck at Glen Innes about 3.35pm (AEDT) on Friday.

The passengers were treated at the scene for minor injuries, while the truck driver underwent mandatory drug and alcohol testing.

NSW Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian extended her sympathy to the family of the bus driver.

The driver had worked for a bus company contracted to provide the service to CountryLink, Ms Berejiklian said in a statement.

"My thoughts are also with the injured passengers after this terrible accident," she said.

"The circumstances will be thoroughly investigated."

The CEO of the truck driver's company, McColl's, also sent his condolences to the man's family and friends.

Simon Thornton said McColl's staff were helping police and the coroner with their investigations, with personnel sent to the region to assist.

"Our hearts go out to the family and friends of the bus driver and the passengers who were injured. This is tragic and distressing for all of us at McColl's," Mr Thornton said in a statement.

The Gwydir Highway between Glen Innes and Grafton is closed and diversions are in place.
