Molly Meldrum's cheeky side is slowly coming back as he recovers from a fall that almost killed him, a longtime friend says.

The entertainment guru's assistant and dear friend, Yael Cohn, says despite his huge injuries, Meldrum hasn't taken a step backward in his recovery and would never want people to be sad about his situation.

"The idea is to keep him as peaceful as possible while ... it's a bit like his brains rewiring; it's been scrambled and it has to rewire itself," Ms Cohn told the Seven Network's Sunday Night program.

"He wants people to be happy and he would never want anyone to be sad over him because he's actually got so much to live for and he's such a lucky man because he's still in this world."

Ms Cohn is positive Meldrum will return to good health.

"I see the cheeky person that he is slowly coming back and he'll definitely be back to tell us all what to do soon," she said.

"He's not taken one step backwards at all, so that's a huge thing for us. So as long as we see improvement every day, we're happy."

Meldrum, who turned 66 last month, suffered serious head injuries after falling three metres at his Richmond home on December 15.

He spent five weeks at Melbourne's The Alfred hospital before being transferred to the Epworth Rehabilitation hospital.

He had post-traumatic amnesia, with symptoms including short-term memory loss and disorientation.

Brian Meldrum said it never crossed his mind his brother would lose his life.

"Even when I knew that he was in a life-threatening situation, I just for some reason or other - I don't know what it is and I'm not a great believer in the spirit world and all that sort of jazz - but I just ... it never actually crossed my mind that he would lose his life," he said.

"And yet he was in danger of losing his life."

Ms Cohn said despite his injuries, Meldrum was still the same person.

"The same mannerisms, the same characteristics, the same sense of humour, the same thoughts - it's just a little bit scrambled, so yeah he's the same person already," she said.

"He's still got a long way to go. It's a huge injury, it's a huge recovery, but for Brian and I, seeing him in a coma to seeing him now is just such a delight. We're so grateful."

The program airs at 6.30pm (AEDT) on Sunday.
