Nine News reporter Peter Harvey says he does not blame the bulldogs that attacked him while walking in Sydney's Centennial Park yesterday.
The veteran journalist is in Prince of Wales Hospital this morning awaiting a skin graft after one of the dogs tore a deep 25cm-long gash in his leg.
He was walking with his daughter's dog, Jake, yesterday when the two bulldogs charged at him.
"All of a sudden these two bulldogs erupted from under a picnic table," he told ninemsn from his hospital bed.
"They were trying to get to my daughter's dog. I was literally caught in the middle of a dog fight."
His wound is being left to heal for two days before skin graft surgery.
He said the attack had caused "all sorts of drama" because Centennial Park regulations required the dogs to be on a lead.
Police officers visited him last night to take a statement and Randwick City Council had also become involved, Mr Harvey said.
"I certainly do not want the dogs put down. Dogs are dogs, and it's not their fault," he said.
He said the people who owned the dogs were "horrified" when they saw what happened.
Mr Harvey thanked the people who came to his aid in the park, including a female doctor who came rushing over, as well as the park rangers and the ambulance officers who attended the scene.
He said he was hoping to be out of hospital within a few days.
