Notorious standover man Mark 'Chopper' Read has been banned from firing the starter's pistol at his son's Little Athletics races.

Read, 57, who boasted of killing 19 people during his time as a standover man in Melbourne in the 1980s, applied for a Working With Children Check in September so he could volunteer at Collingwood Little Athletics Club, Daily Telegraph

Read said his eight-year-old son Roy had been attending Little Athletics for a year when he was asked to volunteer to fire the starter's pistol for races.

It is understood his application was rejected by Victoria's Department of Justice because of Read's extensive criminal history that saw him spend 23 years in jail.

Read said he has withdrawn Roy from Little Athletics, claiming the races are fixed.
