Labor has formally claimed victory in the Port Adelaide by-election.
The South Australian government has been touting for days its win in Port Adelaide despite a big swing against them that turned the seat marginal, and a comfortable win in former premier Mike Rann's seat of Ramsay.
Labor state secretary Kyam Maher said on Tuesday the party was now formally claiming success in Port Adelaide for Susan Close.
"With a lead of over 1,000 votes and the likelihood that there are only about that many votes left to open, it is safe to say that Susan Close will be the next member for Port Adelaide," Mr Maher said in a statement.
He congratulated Dr Close and the new Labor member for Ramsay, Zoe Bettison on their victories.
Voters were choosing replacements for Mr Rann and his long-time former deputy Kevin Foley who announced their retirements last year.
Mr Foley's Port Adelaide seat was seen as a tough prospect for Dr Close, with strong independent competition.
Ramsay is in Adelaide's northern suburbs, and solidly working class.
The biggest employer in the region is car maker Holden.
