Two children have been located safely in the ACT after NSW police issued an urgent statewide alert.

Police had held grave fears for the safety of the four-year-old boy and his 12-year-old sister after they were taken from the NSW Central Coast today by their mother.

A number of threats had been made by a family member.

A motorist in Canberra heard the alert on a radio news bulletin and notified police that he was following the vehicle being sought.

An ACT Police vehicle intercepted the wanted car and it was stopped on a roadside.

A woman and the two children have been taken to Belconnen Police Station.
