A Melbourne couple had their Valentine's Day plans interrupted spectacularly when their home's water damaged roof suddenly collapsed.
Chris and Seb Ces were cooking a special Valentine's Day dinner on Tuesday when they realised the internal roof of their Aspendale Gardens home was starting to give way.
The house had suffered water damage from the recent heavy rain in Victoria and similar weather 12 months ago.
"All of a sudden we started to hear noises and then we noticed lots of cracks appearing," Mr Ces told A Current Affair.
The couple took their two daughters to another part of the house and started filming in time to capture it crashing down.
The footage shows a large crack slowly spreading to the middle of the ceiling above the living and kitchen area, before the whole thing begins to bow inwards.
The Valentine's Day dinner still rests on the stove underneath the rubble.
The couple's insurer, Westpac, initially refused to cover the damage, putting it down to the building work on the 11 year-old home but later issued an apology.
"As a result of assessing the incident under the wrong level of cover, our claims officer did not approve the initial claim over the phone. We have unreservedly apologised to the customer," a spokesperson said.
"We have contacted the customer directly and tradesmen will begin repairs immediately. We will also assist the family with temporary accommodation and waive any excess."
