Former Howard government adviser Arthur Sinodinos has been given a new role to help bolster the coalition's economic credentials.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott on Friday appointed the NSW senator to the coalition's shadow expenditure review committee.

It's the second role for Senator Sinodinos after last year being appointed to the coalition's business deregulation group, which is due to report by mid-year.

The committee, chaired by opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey with finance spokesman Andrew Robb as deputy, is examining government spending and ways to reduce debt and cut regulation.

Senator Sinodinos was chief of staff to former prime minister John Howard between 1996 and 2006.

Liberal backbencher Jamie Briggs will also join the committee.

Mr Abbott has also appointed frontbencher Greg Hunt as deputy chairman of the coalition's policy development committee.
