Queensland Police have described the "bashing" of a Surfers Paradise chef that was caught on film as "a brief struggle" and claimed the victim inflicted injury upon himself when he "fell".
CCTV footage of police apparently kneeing and punching Noa Begic, 21, at the Surfers Paradise police station after he was arrested for singing a provocative song on January 29 has gone viral since it was published online, the Courier Mail reports.
One officer has already been stood down from frontline duties as Ethical Standards and the Crime and Misconduct Commission investigate the incident.
The official charge sheet police completed after Begic's arrest states that he landed face-first on the basement floor because he slipped out of the grasp of officers and fell over.
"The defendant planted his feet ... and pushed towards police in a rapid movement which caused police to lose hold of the defendant," the statement reads.
"The defendant then fell to the ground."
Police allege Begic then rose to his feet and continued scuffling with officers despite calls to stop resisting.
"After a brief struggle the defendant was secured in a prisoner transport van," the statement continued.
CCTV footage then shows an officer punch Begic at least four times after he is placed in the van but the report makes no mention of this.
Begic alleges he was also racially abused by a police officer during the attack.
Police will use the footage to support their charge of obstructing police.
Begic will face court in April charged with public nuisance and obstructing police.
