Actress and television presenter Zoe Naylor has walked free from court after admitting she drove with her puppy on her lap.

The 34-year-old, from Palm Beach, was seen by police driving along a road at Pyrmont last September with her pup Charlie on her lap.

She pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Sydney's Downing Centre Local Court, but said she had not realised it was an offence.

Magistrate Teresa O'Sullivan found the offence proved but dismissed the case without a penalty.

Outside court, the former McLeod's Daughters star said she was amused it was considered a serious offence attracting a penalty of three demerit points and a $350 fine.

"To me that sort of thing requires a warning and then we can save the real penalties for traffic (offences)," she said.
