The Gold Coast mayor is considering switching to state politics and running for a seat in the Queensland parliament at the upcoming election.
Ron Clarke says he'll seek advice and decide by Monday whether to campaign as an independent candidate for his home seat of Broadwater.
Monday is the last day candidates can nominate for the March 24 election.
Mr Clarke says he wants to take Gold Coast issues to state parliament.
"The state government are the only ones that can bring our water prices down for example and correct the injustice foisted upon not only the Gold Coast but everybody else up here," he told AAP.
"There's other things like the Commonwealth Games, the police helicopter and those sorts of issues that I think you need independent representation representing the Gold Coast."
Mr Clarke, 75, was planning to quit council ahead of the April 28 local government elections.
He says he believes his age actually makes him a better politician.
"The older I get the less time I've got left so therefore I have to hurry and get things done," he said.
"I think its incentive to try and move as quick as you possibly can rather than the other way around."
