Police are searching for a man who allegedly tried to abduct a six-year-old girl while she was riding her scooter in northern Sydney.

The girl was near a toilet block in a Turramurra park at 5.30pm (AEDT) on Thursday when people saw a man grab her and start walking away, police said.

Passers-by rescued the girl, before the man ran into bushland.

The girl was distressed but not hurt and has been reunited with her parents.

Police are now appealing for information on the man who has been described as being of Caucasian appearance, aged in his late 40s, with grey hair, a medium build and around 183cm tall.

He was last seen wearing black pants and a blue/grey dress shirt.

He was driving a silver Holden Commodore wagon.

Anyone who knows of the man's identity or whereabouts should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
