Governor General Quentin Bryce will be in New Zealand on the day of the looming Labor leadership showdown.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard will call a ballot for the Labor Party leadership at 10am on Monday following Kevin Rudd's resignation as foreign minister.

Mr Rudd is expected to challenge Ms Gillard for the top job.

The absence of Governor General Bryce could delay the swearing in of Mr Rudd if he were to win caucus backing.

Her office has released her itinerary which says she will be in New Zealand until Thursday.

Ms Bryce will be in Auckland on Monday where she will address a business breakfast, visit a school and will be the guest of honour at a lunch hosted by her Kiwi counterpart.

Ms Bryce swore in Ms Gillard on the same day she took over as party leader on June 24, 2010, at Government House in Canberra.
