A Melbourne woman has successfully sprung a leap year day proposal on her unsuspecting boyfriend at a restaurant overlooking the Yarra River.

Belinda Squires had staff at the Italian restaurant in Southbank insert a note into the lunch menu before handing it to her boyfriend of three years, Jason Gately, shortly after midday.

The note read: "Happy leap year my darling Jason, you look lovely today, I love you very much, will you marry me, Belinda xxx".

Ms Squires, 42, said she just wanted to give her man a "special surprise" and "share it with everybody".

"I thought, he's always surprising me, and bringing me gifts home and flowers for no reason," she said.

"And he only has to celebrate [this occasion] once every four years."

Mr Gately, a 42-year-old IT manager, said he did not see the proposal coming, despite there being a few news cameras trained on him.

"I did notice the red light was on and I thought that was a bit strange," he said.

The couple met online but it took 18 months for them to meet face-to-face and begin dating. They moved in together just over a year ago.

"It’s been an amazing few years," Mr Gately said.
