The Circle host Yumi Stynes has revealed she is engaged amid a massive backlash after she ridiculed an Australian war hero.

The personal revelation came as her morning TV co-hosts brought up her scathing remarks on yesterday's program, in which she mocked Victoria Cross recipient Ben Roberts-Smith as dim-witted.

On today's show Stynes apologised for the comments, which drew a deluge of complaints aimed at Stynes.

VIDEO: Yumi Stynes apologises Co-host Gorgi Coghlan said: "It's been a big day, it's been a big day and we're all human and everyone makes mistakes in life and I think we all forget that.

"I'm very glad that you've got someone like your beautiful man in your life and in your girls' life."

"Thank you," a tearful Stynes replied.

"There's just one more thing … I asked him to marry me."

Her co-hosts were completely shocked by the news, which apparently she had kept a secret from them.

Yesterday Stynes turned on Roberts-Smith as the panel discussed a photo of the muscle-bound corporal standing in a swimming pool.

"He's going to dive down to the bottom of the pool and see if his brain is there," she said.

Shortly afterwards veteran journalist George Negus chimed in, saying: "What if they're not up to it in the sack?"

Roberts-Smith was awarded a Victoria Cross after single-handedly storming a machine-gun position during an assault in Afghanistan in 2010.

On today's show, aired on Network Ten, Stynes admitted she did not know much about Corporal Roberts-Smith and thought he was a "very handsome guy".

"So I made a joke, because how could anybody possibly be so perfect?" she said.

"What I didn't estimate was how much my joke was not appreciated. I sort of intimated that maybe he wasn’t very smart, because how could you be that buff and spend that much time in a gym and be smart as well? And people have been a bit angry and I’ve been getting a lot of angry messages.

"And I'm really sorry. I didn’t mean to offend anybody and I have total respect for people that work in the defence forces, and I’ve never met Ben but I’m sure he’s lovely and he does seem like a big family man."
