Defence has signed a $31 million contract to further upgrade the RAAF's AP-3C Orion maritime surveillance aircraft.
Minister for Defence Personnel, Materiel and Science Greg Combet said the deal would provide a range of enhancements to the Orion aircraft and their ground support systems.
The new system will be installed by 2011 and will remain operational until the AP-3C is withdrawn from service in 2015.
The work will be carried out under a joint deal between the Defence Materiel Organisation, BAE Systems Australia and Australian Aerospace, and is expected to create 50 additional civilian jobs.
The Orion aircraft operate from RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia and conduct extensive border patrol work around the country.
Two Orion are also based in the Middle East, conducting patrols over the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean.
