The wife of a missing Hobart cancer specialist has been charged with murdering him.

Royal Hobart Hospital's chief radiation physicist Bob Chappell, 65, was last seen alive by his partner of more than 20 years Susan Fraser, his second wife, on their yacht in the Derwent River on Australia Day this year.

Police said they arrested Fraser, 55, on Thursday and charged her with murdering Mr Chappell.

She appeared briefly in the Hobart Magistrates Court on Thursday to face the charge.

She was not required to enter a plea and Magistrate Chris Webster remanded her in custody to reappear in the same court on Friday.

Fraser was the last person to say they saw Mr Chappell alive.

She told police she left him on board their moored yacht in Hobart about 2pm on January 26 because he wanted to work on the boat and sleep on board that night.

The yacht was discovered partially submerged the next day.

Police said it had been deliberately sabotaged.

Mr Chappell's body has not been recovered despite an extensive search of the river.
