Emergency services used a crane to lift an obese man from his apartment on a Brisbane bridge.

The Walter Taylor Bridge, between Indooroopilly and Chelmer in Brisbane's west, has two towers that accommodate a number of residents.

One of the residents — a 57-year-old man reported to weigh around 300kg — called for an ambulance on Thursday afternoon.

He is believed to have suffered an asthma attack.

The Australian newspaper reports that rescuers opened a 1m-wide window in the apartment and lifted the man through the opening.

A large metal bucket attached to the crane with chains was positioned against the window opening and the man was lowered to safety shortly before 6pm.

An emergency services spokeswoman said hthe man was taken to the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

The crane was parked at the side of the road to enable traffic to cross the bridge.
