A brawl has erupted after a rugby league grand final in north Queensland.

The brawl between supporters of the two teams began at about 5.45pm (AEST) on Sunday in the licensed area at the Townsville Sports Reserve, police said.

It grew worse as others tried to separate those fighting, which led to more and more people becoming involved.

The fighting is thought to have involved between 30 and 50 people and lasted for about five minutes, police said.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for public nuisance offences.

He will appear in the Townsville Magistrates Court on September 23.
