Anti-coal activists have taken their concerns to the Victorian Parliament steps, with about 40 of them gathering on Monday to launch a campaign to close one of the state's coal power stations.

Community organisations will protest at Victoria's Hazelwood power station next Sunday in a push to close the station and encourage the Latrobe Valley community to make the transition to renewable energy.

Pablo Brait, the spokesperson for the campaign Switch off Hazelwood, Switch off Coal, Switch on Renewables', said demonstrators were prepared to be arrested to get their message across.

He said hundreds of people were expected to march on the power station while several protesters would deliver a symbolic community decommissioning order to Hazelwood operators.

Mr Brait admitted this could breach areas police had indicated would not be accessible.

He said coal was not the answer to saving jobs in the Latrobe Valley and a transition could be made to manufacturing, for example, renewable energy components.
