Rugby league great Wally Lewis has been named the face of Epilepsy Qld, himself a lifelong sufferer.
Football great Wally Lewis has agreed to become the face of Epilepsy Queensland.
Lewis, now a sports presenter with the Nine Network, has gone public about his 20-year battle with epilepsy, recently publishing a book, Out of the Shadows, about the impact it has had on his life.
Epilepsy Queensland's chief executive Helen Whitehead said Lewis had demonstrated considerable courage in stepping out to share his story.
"He's given hope to many people with epilepsy and inspired them to talk about their epilepsy, when in some cases they'd been hiding it for a lifetime," Ms Whitehead said.
"Wally is a great ambassador for our cause; a hero on and off the field."
Lewis was the keynote speaker at a Canberra breakfast on Thursday for the Parliamentary Friends of Epilepsy, which is conducting an inquiry into the impact the condition has on Australians.
Around two per cent of the nation's population have epilepsy.
