A Sydney person has won $8.5 million in the Monday Lotto - the largest haul ever recorded for a single NSW resident.

The mystery winner from Greystanes, in Sydney's west, came forward on Tuesday morning to claim his or her prize and asked to remain anonymous.

The payout is the biggest win by a NSW player in Monday, Wednesday or Saturday Lotto, beating the old record set in January 2009 when a 52-year-old Sydney woman won $6 million, NSW Lotteries said in a statement.

Greystanes Centre Newsagency sold the winning ticket and staff have decorated the shop to mark the celebration.

"I can't even begin to imagine how the winner must be feeling this morning - they must be very shocked," newsagency manager Robyn Skaines said in a statement.

The winning numbers from Monday night's Lotto draw were 39, 21, 9, 11, 40 and 31, with the supplementary numbers 38 and 12.

This week marks the 30th anniversary of Lotto.

More than 950 NSW residents have become millionaires since the first draw on November 5, 1979.
