Australia Post worker Georgia is hoping her luck comes in threes after she handed police a package containing $100,000 that she found in the laneway behind her suburban post office.

Georgia, who didn't want to give her surname, had collected $4,500 in a winning Melbourne Cup trifecta before her big find on Wednesday.

Police think she could be in for a reward and have praised her honesty.

"I think Georgia has done a fantastic job, and it's great to see someone in the community is doing the right thing," said Constable Mike Hannie on Thursday.

Georgia admits she didn't open the package which carried a Commonwealth Bank brand and "$50" markings.

"I didn't want to know what was inside it," she told reporters.

"I saw the CBA symbol and the $50 symbols and put two and two together and thought the best thing to do was contact police."

The honest postie said there had been no offers of a reward but "it wouldn't go astray".

She said CBA could kick in a few dollars for the post office branch Christmas party.

"That would be nice," she said.

A CBA ATM is close to the post office in Clayton South in Melbourne's east, although the money was found at the rear of the shops.

Const Hannie said he and a sergeant at the Springvale police station put on gloves to count the money which they had estimated would be around $30,000.

"We were surprised to find $100,000 so we counted it twice," he said.

A security company has claimed the money, but police will investigate how the money, stored in an ATM cartridge, came to be propped up against a back door in the laneway.
