A six-year-old boy has been attacked by an armed intruder who gained entry to a family's home in Sydney, police say.

Police were called to a Pilgrim Avenue home at Dulwich Hill, in the city's inner west, about 3am (AEDT) on Saturday.

Inspector Robert Danks said the alleged 64-year-old intruder was wearing a stocking over his head and latex gloves.

The intruder entered the home by a side door and the father was awoken by the loud screams of his youngest son, Insp Danks said.

The father then chased the intruder, caught him outside the house and sat on him on the grass until police arrived.

"Upon arrival, officers found the child's father restraining a 64-year-old man," police said in a statement.

"A search of the alleged offender also allegedly uncovered a large knife and other items which were seized by police."

Insp Danks said the father has done a "good job" in apprehending the offender.

"As a father and police officer, it would be scary to find someone on your premises at 3am," Insp Danks said.

"It's a quiet street, I'm shocked."

The man's wife and their 10-year-old son were also in the house at the time.

The six-year-old boy was taken to hospital for treatment for minor injuries and has since been released.

"The boy was upset, shaken up, but he was physically fine," Insp Danks said.

The intruder was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries before being questioned by police.

Specialist and uniformed police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Anyone with information about the alleged attack should contact police by calling Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
