Minister Brendan O'Connor says those on board a vessel carrying suspected asylum seekers are safe.
Two suspected asylum seeker vessels have been intercepted by Australian patrol boats near the Ashmore Islands within 24 hours.
At 1.30pm on Friday, Australian authorities intercepted a boat carrying 26 suspected asylum seekers near West Islet, Ashmore Islands, Home Affairs Minister Brendan O'Connor said in a statement.
It is the second boat in 24 hours to be intercepted off the West Australian coast and the 49th asylum seeker vessel to arrive in Australian waters this year.
The group - 22 passengers and four crew - will be transferred to Christmas Island where they will undergo security, identity and health checks and their reasons for travel will be established.
On Thursday night, a navy boat went to the aid of a vessel carrying 29 suspected asylum seekers and two crew in waters about 150 nautical miles southwest of the Ashmore Islands. They were also taken to Christmas Island.
