A three-year-old SMS message that falsely says ninemsn will publish blasphemous cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed is spreading through the Australian Islamic community again.

The message asks people to vote on a poll that this website posted in February 2006, which asked readers whether or not cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed should be published.

The vote was posted in response to a Danish newspaper printing cartoons of Mohammed, who cannot be depicted under Islamic law.

The SMS message is false and ninemsn had no intention of publishing the Mohammed cartoons.

Nine Network South Australia General Manager Graeme Gilbertson also said the station had no intention of broadcasting the material.

"The text message is clearly a hoax, but we do not know who has implicated Channel Nine," Mr Gilbertson said.

"The material is offensive to many people, and the Islamic community can be rest assured that we will not be publishing it in any form."

The SMS hoax incorrectly states that unless three million "no" votes are received, ninemsn will publish the cartoons.

It also includes a link to the poll, which this website deactivated three years ago in an attempt to stop the hoax.

The final poll results were 65,566 votes for publication of the cartoons and 2,158,490 against.
