A KFC advertisement that shows an Australian cricket supporter giving fried chicken to West Indies fans has caused outrage in the US, where it has been interpreted as racist.

Live scorecard: Australia v Pakistan

In the ad, part of KFC's "Cricket Survival Guide" series, Mick the Australian is surrounded by dancing West Indies fans, and says: "Need a tip when you're stuck in an awkward situation?"

He then hands out a bucket of KFC to the crowd — an action which has been seen as supporting a long-standing US stereotype that African Americans eat fried chicken.

Read what ninemsn readers have to say about the ad below.

A statement from KFC Australia this morning confirmed the company was aware the ad had been "misinterpreted by a segment of people in the US".

"It is a light-hearted reference to the West Indian cricket team," the statement read.

"The ad was reproduced online in the US without KFC's permission, where we are told a culturally-based stereotype exists, leading to the incorrect assertion of racism.

"We unequivocally condemn discrimination of any type and have a proud history as one of the world's leading employers for diversity."

In the US bloggers and journalists have claimed the ad is deliberately racist, with the Baltimore Sun even suggesting the ad might be part of a viral prank.

Popular viral media website Buzzfeed posted the video with the subtitle: "What's a white guy to do when he awkwardly finds himself in a crowd full of black folks? KFC has the answer."

Dr Brendon O'Connor, an associate professor at the University of Sydney, said reaction to the ad reflected the "insularity" of the American people.

"They have a tendency to think that their history is more important than that of other countries," he told ninemsn.

But Dr O'Connor, who is currently writing a book about US stereotypes, also said it was important to realise that when taken out of context the ads could look racist.

"Fried chicken is seen as a traditional southern food ... a staple of an African American diet," he said.

"We don't have many African American people here and we don't have these stereotypes.

"Americans would find the ads racist mostly because they don't realise the context that the West Indies team was here to play cricket."

Dr Peter Gale, a senior lecturer at the University of South Australia, said the ad could affect Australia's reputation internationally — especially in the wake of the Hey Hey It's Saturday blackface scandal

"Even when we're doing advertising we need to be careful about pre-existing historical stereotypes," Dr Gale said.

"We have got a responsibility to be aware of that, and I think that if the media doesn't wise up we're in a lot of trouble."

We all know Americans in General have no sence of humor and it seems some Australians dont have one either. Its meant to be funny but if you dont understand Cricket and the teams or Country's who play the game then your probably not gonna get this Add, and by the way it was for Australian audience.Maybe they should ban adds fullstop...now thats a good point..my mouth is watering I gotta go and get some KFC.
The majority of Australians are not racist. Australian KFC is huge here with many families across the nation enjoying it, regardless of the colour of their skin. The Ad goes whether the rival team is white, black, purple or green. But we are currently playing against West Indies! And KFC only for African-Americans? Unlike Australia, Americans are spoilt for choice when it comes to fast-food. I.e. Wendy’s, KFC, Whataburger, Hardees, McDonalds, Burger King, Chic-Fil-A, Taco Bell, etc! We Australians, on the other hand, have what? McDonalds, KFC, Hungry Jacks(burger king), and Red Rooster and periodically a few others. My point- surrounded by rival fans, you‘d feel awkward! You certainly wouldn’t jump up cheering when your team scores! Americans should know and understand this, as they are so big into NFL. Why not share the food you enjoy. Be friends! Sounds like a good message to me! One that I’d be happy to teach my children. It’s just a game, after-all. Happy New Year 2 u
'Maria from dubai'if u are so ashamed of australia what are you doing on an aussie website?? if you want to talk about racism you need to only look at your comment, we are a people too and yes some ppl are racist in australia but they are in every country, this add was made in good humour, and if anyone should have a problem with it it should be the west indies not america. not everything is about you america
The add it self is inocsent. It's just our multicultual ways we support our sporting teams and we welcome other people from other countries with out racisum or expetations. I am left to wonder just how many thought it to be racist, BEFORE the Viral media BUZZFEED (paragraph 8 ) got hold of it and added the caption to it. Other media making it Racist NOT Ausies. See the add for what it is, WE like to Please every one and OUR culture is freindly.
'African Americans eat fried chicken.' If it is a fact then what is racist about mentioning it?
what the heck???? white Australia!! ?? you are one messed up cookie.. I am part aboriginal, my great grandma one of the stolen! but guess what chicken legs i have no hang ups! i love it here and i have friends of many races. Cant change the past. i wasnt alive then and neihter were u. but we can shape our future. people need to take responcibility for their own lives, and stop looking to the government to fix everything. (one thing i will say on the government is that they should make all benifits the same regardless of race.) but australia is a beautiful place and i love it here. i am proud to be australian.
Again the dozen or so civil rights personel speaking for the 300 million Americans, what a shame, and Maria from Dubai, maybe it's about time you surrended you Aussie passport for a New Zealand one, or are the off shore benefits from Australia better?
What a joke this is, all I can say is have you noticed that the biggest screamers of racism are the very people who are the biggest racists. Imagin this, a group of people screaming racist taunts at police, polititions ect. Australians arested the other group it's ok, you poor things make the laws equal for all. The Australian population is made up of so many combinations that you pick the so called Aussie it is likly they have that race in their family history. It is getting to be a joke. Take the golly *** millions of kids grew up for years loving this icon not any more, but the thing is what colour can you have, thats not racist to some country or other. Even white is out. I seen the add and did not even think of race only the racist did.
I was born and raised in America, but now call Australia my home. I have only been here a year, but I can tell you this, "After experiencing life over here, I am never going back!" It is this same nonsense that made us move over here in the first place. Political correctness is destroying the USA and now they want to spread this disease across the rest of the world. Whatever you do Australia, do not follow in America's footsteps! I am honored and proud to call Australia my home!!!
Is he a doctor of the spin, bulls*%t? since when does america take notice of Australia. They held our beef markets to ransom, they sell our cars cheaper to themselves than we can buy, we go and fight their wars cause it is a good thing to do. Have we just been put on this earth to be puppets for the Yanks. why is the yanks the only ones complaining about the ad. There are other black people in the world and they're not complaining. One thing this country has and that is ballz. we may get beaten in the cricket by the ***'s but not without a fight. we didn't give up on the battlefields so lets not sell our values and beliefs all because of what someone else thinks. Gale can go live with the Yanks
