Family First candidate Bob Day has missed out on the final Senate seat in South Australia.

At the distribution of preferences in Adelaide on Wednesday, the Australian Electoral Commission said the Liberal Party had taken three seats, Labor two and the Greens one.

The successful candidates were Mary Jo Fisher, Sean Edwards and David Fawcett for the Liberals, Alex Gallacher and Anne McEwen for Labor and Penny Wright from the Greens.

Mr Day was fighting for the final spot with Mr Fawcett after standing as a Liberal candidate in the 2007 election.

Ms Wright's election will give the Greens two SA senators from July when she will join Sarah Hanson-Young in the upper house.

The distribution of preferences has also brought a close to the Senate career of Labor's Dana Wortley who was given the tough number three spot on the party's ticket at the August 21 poll.

Ms Wortley will remain in the Senate until July.
