Earning its label as a cunning operator, one little fox outwits Queensland's devastating floods by riding it out on a floating tyre.

Hobby photographer Chris Young was touring his water-logged hometown of Texas, 2km north of the Queensland-NSW border, when a friend spotted something unusual: "Look, there's a dog out there!"

Mr Young focused his camera on a tyre drifting over flooded farmlands about 50m from where he stood — but standing atop the rubber tube was not a dog but a red fox.

"I have no idea how far it travelled — it could have travelled for miles," the 58-year-old postal worker told ninemsn.

Mr Young said the fox surveyed his surrounds before leaping into the water and swimming off.

It was a lighter moment during what is a difficult time for Texas as farmers assess the damage of floodwaters from nearby Dumaresq River.

Mr Young said a more common sight is not of foxes but of one-tonne bales of hay carried away by the deluge.
