The sinking of the Montevideo Maru is believed to have claimed the lives of more than 1000 Australian POWs and civilians — nearly double the number killed in the attack on HMAS Sydney.

The families of those who went down with the ship are calling on the federal government to fund a search for the wreck off the west coast of the Philippines — as John Howard's government did in the hunt for what remained of the HMAS Sydney.
