Olympic child singing star 'fake'

The little girl who starred at the Olympic opening ceremony was miming and only put on stage because the real singer was not considered attractive enough, the show's musical director has revealed.

Pigtailed Lin Miaoke was selected to appear because of her cute appearance and did not sing a note, Chen Qigang, the general music designer of the ceremony, said in an interview with a state broadcaster yesterday.

Do the Chinese deserve to be criticised for substituting a "prettier" girl and for allowing Lin Miaoke to lip sync? Leave your thoughts below.

Photographs of Lin in a bright red party dress were published in newspapers and websites all over the world and the official China Daily hailed her as a rising star yesterday.

But Chen said the girl whose voice was actually heard by the 91,000 capacity crowd at the Olympic stadium during the spectacular ceremony was in fact seven-year-old Yang Peiyi, who has a chubby face and uneven teeth.

"The reason why little Yang was not chosen to appear was because we wanted to project the right image, we were thinking about what was best for the nation," Chen said in an interview that appeared briefly on the news website Sina.com before it was apparently wiped from the internet in China.

Lin was seen to perform the patriotic song "Ode to the Motherland" as China's national flag was carried into the stadium, a key moment in the three hour ceremony.

"The reason was for the national interest. The child on camera should be flawless in image, internal feelings, and expression," said Chen, a renowned contemporary composer and French citizen.

"Lin Miaoke is excellent in those aspects. But in terms of voice, Yang Peiyi is perfect, each member of our team agreed," he said.

He said the final decision to stage the event with Lin lip-synching to another girl's voice was taken after a senior member of China's ruling Communist Party politburo attended a rehearsal.

"He told us there was a problem that we needed to fix it, so we did," he said, without disclosing further details of the order.

The Beijing Olympic organising committee confirmed the episode with spokesman Sun Weide saying the decision was taken in the interests of providing the best possible show.

"A number of girls were on the short list for the show and Lin was the best actress while Yang had the best voice," he said. "So at the end of the day they decided to have both."

The ceremony directed by China's Oscar-nominated filmmaker Zhang Yimou and featuring more than 15,000 performers won high praise in China and overseas for its breadth, scope and flawless execution.

However criticism began to build after it emerged that another part of the opening ceremony had been faked.

Supposedly live pictures of fireworks depicting footprints moving from central Beijing's Tiananmen Square to the Olympic stadium in the north of the capital were actually partly computer-generated or pre-recorded for TV, organisers have admitted.

Wang Wei, vice president of the organising committee, Tuesday insisted the fireworks had actually exploded on the night and that most of the television images used were genuine.

"However, because of the poor visibility of the night some previously recorded foots may have been used," he said.

Xiao Qiang, the director of the China internet project at the University of California at Berkeley and former dissident, said the two incidents illustrated the political nature of the Games for China.

"I do not think the Chinese state realises how unethical this is, they don't understand what kind of values they are reflecting," he said.

Earlier this year Olympic organisers preoccupied with the right image for the country were criticised for insisting that only tall, slim, young and attractive women could serve as medal award ceremony hostesses.

Re Posted by zeck sydney 13 Aug 08 11.41.05. You have put it very well you have put better than I would have. having been informed many years ago that the chinese political party had the beleif that if a child or Adult was not perfect they could be banished or go missing were the words used. The countries of the world of free people should make a stance against this type of discrimination specialy against those less fortunate. yang would have been loved by all that seen her in person and heard her voice.
It is scary to think that the Chinese Government truly believe the rest of the world are only interested in extenal appearences. Authenticity and integrity are obviously not the priority here. Also spare a thought for this "pretty" little girl - her image beamed to millions soley because she looks cute however her voice was not up to scratch. Neither child will truly have the thrill and recognition that they deserve from participating in an Olympic Ceremony.
they decieved us with the fireworks, they decieved us with the the little girl singing, surly you have to now scrutinize the medal tally
look, what they did was wrong.. VERY WRONG!! coz that girl is really VERY cute!! poor kid... gonna raise a generation of depressed suicidal kids, but seriously, don't bag out china, coz every other superficial country does it too (america, britain, australia, etc). not to mention our anorexic models who influence teenagers, yet somehow clothing sizes are getting bigger! 8 used to be extra small, now its starting to border on medium!! also not to mention these stupid talent-reality shows! hlaf the kids have NO talent and only get through based on cuteness! what does that tell us? just coz china made a mistake during a BIG event doesnt mean they are bad. the only difference is that its taken a lil longer to sink to our level. and it just happened to be on a universal level..
So a good looking person gets better treatment than one less good looking? Gee... that's news. Can't blame China for that.
what a shame!
what a shame.
to have the 'voice' considered the best, and used to the glory and pride of her nation. What an honour! Don't forget that the Chinese organiser themself revealed this information, so that little Yang will also be admired and recognised !!!
Why do people so often ride the moral high horse and reprimand anything shallow when the world just is superficial? The Oscars or celebrity award shows tailor make their photos to portray our 'equality for everyone' principles. Superficial beauty. Check Deal or No Deal or Million Dollar Wheel of Fortune. The girls all share the following- Height, gaunt figures, fair skin, and often in Australian media, blonde hair. In Ugly Betty, the show takes the mickey out of the not so ideal golden girl looks. Is that ethical? Is that 'equality' right there? The beautiful get slotted into glamorous shows, whilst Ugly Betties are reared to exude 'inner beauty' by being humiliated and applauded for their performance. Had Miss Peiyi performed, we are more gracious with true beauty as opposed to gossip column chumps armed with scalding words. I feel that for a darling seven year old girl, it's better to have a director's subtle discretion than abrasive headlines telling her all sorts of nasties
Forget about the issue of the opening ceremony being a fake, the focus should be on the sport and quite frankly chanel seven is doing a terrible job. It may aswell be called the "SWIM-OLYMPCS".Just because Australia is good at this sport doesn't mean that it has to be shown for hours and hours, lap after lap. All the other sports are shown for 5-10min at a time, and when you just start to enjoy watching it (another sport), what do you know it is back to the swimming, again. Does chanel seven really think that every Australian is the sterotypical-lovestowatchswimming-Aussie! I think SBS, 9 or another station other than 7 should do the coverage of the London Olympics. .
