It may be one of the most popular viral internet crazes of the last few years but due to copyright infringement it may disappear from the internet altogether.

A clip from the 2004 German film Downfall showing an actor playing Hitler throwing a tantrum has become one of the most parodied videos on the internet.

But now Constantin Film, who made the Oscar-nominated film, has requested the YouTube remove the hundreds of clips from the site, claiming copyright infringement, the AV Club reported.

Already clips from the movie are being removed from YouTube, potentially bringing an end to one of the internet's most enduring memes.

The parodies take a scene from the film depicting Adolf Hitler in a rage and replace the subtitles to show him shouting about contemporary issues, ranging from Susan Boyle to the iPad.

One of the most popular, entitled 'Hitler Gets Banned from XBox Live', has already been taken off YouTube but the popularity of the meme will mean it will presumably take a long time to remove them all.
