A Californian woman is suing Google after claiming their online map service caused her to be run down by a car.

Lauren Rosenberg was using Google Maps on her mobile phone as she travelled by foot while visiting Park City in Utah.

But she claims the instructions on her Blackberry advised her to walk along Deer Valley Drive — a highway without footpaths — where she was struck by a car.

"As a direct and proximate cause of Defendant Google's careless, reckless and negligent providing of unsafe directions, Plaintiff Lauren Rosenberg was led onto a dangerous highway, and was thereby stricken by a motor vehicle, causing her to suffer severe permanent physical, emotional and mental injuries," AOL News reported court papers as stating.

Key to the case is the fact that a Google Maps warning that appears on personal computers does not feature on mobile phones.

"Use caution — This route may be missing sidewalks or pedestrian paths," the warning reads, which remains absent from the mobile version.

Ms Rosenberg is suing Google for just over $118,000 for medical expenses and loss of income.

She is also pursuing legal action against the driver of the car.
