A Sydney woman who became an instant internet celebrity for her colourful account of a shooting in Kings Cross has now admitted she made the whole thing up.

Police investigating shooting of 27-year-old Justin Kallu in Kings Cross last weekend have confirmed Clare Werbeloff lied about her account.

"She has taken the media for a ride," an officer involved in the investigation told ninemsn, adding that Ms Werbeloff had never actually witnessed the shooting.

"She lied to the media but at no point did she tell police she had seen the shooting," he said.

The 19-year-old found fame online after giving her politically incorrect "eyewitness" account to Nine News.

The video footage of her interview started an online firestorm and was last week attracting hundreds of thousands of views.

A Facebook group, Clare The Kings Cross Bogan, boasted more than 16,000 fans and Ms Werbeloff was forced to hire a publicity agent to cope with media interest in her story.

Nine News freelance cameraman Greg Dulsdon told ninemsn she had approached him after immediately after the shooting and spontaneously given her detailed version of what had happened.

But her account has now been revealed as false.

Ms Werbeloff, who last week told ninemsn she was "loving the attention", wrote on her Facebook page the day after the shooting, "You all got Punk'd".

Ms Werbeloff is set to appear on Nine's A Current Affair tomorrow night.
