What do Justin Bieber, cancer, Zumba, iPads, Julia Gillard, the football World Cup and Toy Story 3 all have in common?

They were among the most popular issues posted by Australians on their Facebook pages in 2010, a new study has found.

The social networking giant examined the top 10 terms and trends mentioned in the status updates of Australian Facebook users, with the results providing some interesting insight into what was on our minds this year.

Not surprisingly, pop culture played a huge part in shaping the interests of Facebook users in 2010, with films, musicians and video games regularly mentioned in status updates.

Every Facebook user has a status update bar on their personal profile page, allowing them to post their thoughts, interests and links to other websites for fellow users to view.

Topping the list for 2010 was Justin Bieber, the mop-haired teenage sensation behind the hits One Time and Baby.

More Australians made reference to the American singer than their own prime minister, who came in at number five.

Cancer was the second most referenced term, followed by Zumba, the hit new dance fitness program taking gyms nationwide by storm.

Technology played its part, with iPads coming in at fourth, while the massive blockbusters Inception and Toy Story 3 listed at sixth and eighth respectively.

The football World Cup, which saw billions tune it to South Africa midway through this year, rated high enough to make number seven, while the Facebook game FrontierVille ranked ninth.

The last trend to make the list was Urban Dictionary, the online dictionary of colloquial words and expressions.

The results are most interesting when compared to the global list of status trends for 2010.

"Bieber Fever" was clearly a global phenomenon, as were Facebook games, films, the World Cup and Apple products.

However, major news stories were clearly on the mind on global Facebook users, with millions of references made to the rescue of the Chilean miners and the Haiti earthquake.

In a sign of the times, the most mentioned term in status updates around the world in 2010 was the digital shorthand acronym "HMU" - or Hit Me Up. The expression means the person is ready to meet with friends.

At its peak, HMU was receiving a massive 80,000 mentions on Facebook profiles every day.
