Mourners have left floral tributes outside Apple's Australian flagship store in Sydney after the company announced today that its founder and former CEO Steve Jobs had died from pancreatic cancer.

The George Street store has added security since the news of Jobs' death captured the interest of Apple fans and the media.

A note left outside the store from a former employee of the Apple founder, Jimmy, said he had been a "legend and awesome inspiration".

Another tribute, signed "still connecting the dots, Denise", said he had changed the world.

"You've changed the world for good and you've changed it for the better. No doubt your love and vision will continue to live through the legacy you have left the world."

Fans in the US have gathered outside Apple stores in a public outpouring of grief, and many have also left messages and flowers outside his home in Palo Alto, California.

The 56-year-old visionary stood aside as Apple chief executive on August 24 citing health problems, but remained on the board of directors.

He had earlier battled pancreatic cancer in 2004 and had received a liver transplant in 2009.

"Apple has lost a visionary and creative genius, and the world has lost an amazing human being," Apple said in a statement posted on their website.

"Those of us who have been fortunate enough to know and work with Steve have lost a dear friend and an inspiring mentor.

"Steve leaves behind a company that only he could have built, and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple."

US President Barack Obama has remembered Jobs as one of America's greatest innovators, saying the world has lost a visionary.

Obama said in a statement that Jobs was brave enough to think differently, bold enough to believe he could change the world, and talented enough to do it.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said America had lost a genius who would be remembered in the same breath as Edison and Einstein, and whose ideas will shape the world for generations to come.

Meanwhile in Canberra, Prime Minister Julia Gillard took time out from a employment forum to praise Mr Jobs as an "incredible global innovator".

"Here we are at a Future Jobs Forum and the jobs of the future are going to be shaped by innovation and we hear the news of the loss of an incredible global innovator," she said.

Jobs was born in San Francisco in 1955 as the love child of a Syrian and an American graduate student, and was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs and raised in suburban Mountain View.

He was a college dropout who became obsessed with computers while working at Hewlett Packard over summer to raise money for an overseas trip, NY Daily News reports

There he met Steve Wozniak, and the friends later founded Apple Computer together in his parents' garage in 1976, when Jobs was 21-years-old .

The company released the Apple I, and the Apple II.

Four years later, at the age of 25, Jobs was worth US$239million.

He was fired from Apple the following year, in 1985, after a power struggle with the board.

Jobs then acquired animation studio Pixar and turned it into a blockbuster-making powerhouse.

His return to Apple as CEO in 1997 saw a renaissance for the struggling company, starting with the popular iMac computer.

Under his guidance, Apple revolutionised the music industry with the introduction of iPods and the iTunes store.

Apple shook up the mobile phone industry with the launch of the iPhone.

Steve Jobs also oversaw the introduction of the iPad tablet computer in 2010.

He is survived by his wife Laurene and four children.
