Millions of ladybirds have invaded a Colorado town, turning houses and trees into pulsating red structures.

The town, which tourist-fearing residents have asked the media not to name, is believed to be in Jefferson County, southwest of Denver.

Colorado's 9News was granted access to the town and reporter Chris Vanderveen recounted the sight of a local house on the station's website.

"There were dozens of them floating in the air. And then we saw the back of the house. That very well could have been the moment that I lost my you know what," Vanderveen wrote.

"There were thousands of them; they landed on my shirt, they crawled up my pants, a couple were clearly squashed in the bottom of my shoe — and yes, one even flew into my mouth."

Jenifer Doane from Denver's Butterfly Pavilion told 9News the wet spring and early summer had led to the increased numbers of ladybirds.

The mass gatherings were described as "classic" mating behaviour, and once complete the tiny creatures would disperse back into the wild.
