A young worker has jumped to his death after an iPhone prototype he was responsible for went missing.

Sun Danyong, 25, jumped from his apartment in the city of Shenzhen, in China's Guangdong province north of Hong Kong last week, after he was reportedly interrogated over the missing product.

He worked at a plant run by massive electronics component-maker Foxconn — which manufactures iPods and iPhones — and was responsible for handling product communications.

Sun reported one of 16 fourth-generation iPhone prototypes was missing on July 13, four days after he received them from the production line.

Surveillance video from inside Sun's apartment building shows he jumped from the 12-storey to his death just after 3am on Thursday morning, three days after he reported the phone missing.

The night before his suicide, Sun told classmates online about how he was interrogated by Foxconn's security team, local newspaper the Shenzhen Daily reports.

Conversations posted online by his classmates showed how Sun had told them he had been placed in custody and had been beaten, and his home had been searched by Foxconn employees.

"Friends and colleagues, I say once again here that I didn't steal the phone," Sun said in an online post that was reposted by classmate.

"I don't know what they will do to me next &3151; maybe just beat me again and send me to the police office for a random reason."

Foxconn confirmed in an official statement that their head of security, Gu Qinming, had been suspended without pay and turned over to police.

"We feel sorry for Sun's death and the damage done to his family," the statement read.

"We will also improve our own management to prevent such incidents from happening again."

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Sun's death.
