A Singaporean researcher has developed a robotic device in the shape of a pig that can emulate and transmit a kiss, adding an extra level of intimacy to long distance relationships.

The 'Kissinger' is the size and shape of a softball and has touch-sensitive lips that can detect and replicate the way a person kisses.

Its creator, artificial intelligence researcher Hooman Samani, said the device helps close the physical gap between people and can also add a titillating new dimension to video games.

"Humans can kiss virtual characters while playing games and receive physical kisses from their favourite virtual characters," Mr Samani wrote on his website.

He believes the Kissinger could also change the relationships people have with robots.

Mr Samani has previously developed a pair of cabbage patch doll "surrogates" that copy human voices and gestures.
