The federal government will spend $2 million attempting to turn Australia's high school students into science nerds.

The Science and Technology Education Leveraging Relevance (STELR) program will be implemented in about 180 secondary schools next year, aimed at increasing participation in science-related careers.

The project, which has a focus on renewable energy and a hands-on approach to science, will target Year 9 and Year 10 students.

It is part of the government's self-proclaimed education revolution.
