Police in Sweden believe the popular online game World of Warcraft may have played a role in the murder of a 28-year-old woman over the weekend.

Erika Eriksson was found strangled to death in her apartment on Sunday morning after spending the night celebrating with friends she knew from playing the game together, investigators said.

A 33-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murder, had met Eriksson recently in the game, Swedish newspaper Nya Wermlands-Tidningen reported.

The man was reportedly in the apartment when her body was discovered at around 7am on Sunday.

Prosecutor Christina Voight told the Metro newspaper the role the online game may have played in the murder was something police were looking at closely.

"We know there are connections and it’s something we’re looking into," she said.

The biggest multi-player computer game of all time, World of Warcraft has millions of users around the world.
