A Chinese man was sentenced to death for murdering 13 people including three police officers over more than a decade, state media reported.

Cheng Ruilong, 37, who was using an alias, was arrested for robbery in the eastern province of Jiangxi in January 2005, the Xinhua news agency said, and sentenced to seven years in jail.

But authorities discovered his true identity in May last year, Xinhua said, and convicted him of a litany of killings, rapes and robberies spanning 14 years across southern and eastern China.

Cheng did not say if he would appeal after the sentence was announced Sunday, Xinhua said.

The agency did not give any further details on Cheng's crimes.
