Panda filmed chewing on pig bones

A rogue panda has eschewed its normal bamboo diet to snack on the bones of dead pigs at a farm in China.

The animal was first spotted in a field in Shandong province before turning up in a pig pen belonging to a local family, state media reported.

Television cameras captured the panda sitting inside and using two hands while it chewed on the bones.

The animal ate only select parts of the bones and spat away most of the meat.

It then withdrew from the pen quietly.

It is believed the endangered animal had earlier wandered down from nearby mountains to hunt for food.

Scientists believe there are less than 1600 pandas still alive in China, mostly concentrated in forested high country in the nation’s southwest.
