Mexican police have detained the producer of the Survivor TV series after his wife's body was found dumped in a sewage tank close to their hotel room, a local prosecutor said.

CBS producer Bruce Beresford-Redman reported his 42-year-old wife, Monica Burgos, as missing on Monday in the Caribbean beach resort of Cancun after she left to go shopping.

Her body was found in a waste water treatment tank some 80m from their room in the five star Moon Palace Hotel three days later, Quintana Roo State Prosecutor Bello Melchor Rodriguez told AFP.

Beresford-Redman was "suspected of being responsible" for her death, he said.

Hotel employees said they had seen the couple arguing on Monday night and that Beresford-Redman had threatened to hit her, according to Melchor.

The couple arrived in Cancun on March 31 and were due to return to the United States on Thursday.

An Associated Press report quoted a Mexican official who was not authorised to speak to the media about the case as saying that Mrs Burgos was found dead in a gutter at the Moon Palace Hotel.

Beresford-Redman made a plea to local television station KCAL-TV on Wednesday, saying he was waiting for any word on his wife's fate, People magazine reports.

"I'm very hopeful someone will find my wife very soon," he told the station.

Mexican authorities have detained Beresford-Redman's passport.
