A government-funded course that teaches teenage girls how to walk in high heels has raised eyebrows in London.

The six-week class, which is offered girls as young as 16, is held by "technique teacher" Chyna Whyne who says she can improve girls' "business and social lives".

"At some point, girls from the age of 15 upwards will start wanting to wear high heels," the Telegraph quoted Ms Whyne as saying.

"The point, if it's going to happen, the earlier younger ladies learn how to walk in heels, the better it's going to be in the long run."

Ms Whyne, who claims to have also worked as a back-up singer for Eric Clapton and Seal, also spruiks the health benefits of attending her "Sexy Heels In The City" program.

She says suffered from years of "unbearable back injury" before learning the proper technique for wearing stilettos.

"The cramping in the calves, pressure on the balls of the feet, lower back pain, poor posture are some of the common problems," she says on her website.

But the South Thames College course, which teaches women aged between 16 to over 60s how to walk on a catwalk and shop for shoes, has drawn fire from prominent females in the business world.

"This sounds like Britain's most trivial course," the Daily Mail reported Toni Eastwood, director of British women's training group Everywoman, as saying.

"It panders to stereotypes.

"It's an extraordinary waste of money and time."
